- Dunstan Breed & Grow is a low-starch, high-fibre pellet formulated to provide quality nutrition to the pregnant and lactating Mare and Young Growing Horse.
The low-starch and quality fibre ingredients used in Dunstan Breed & Grow (Lucerne Chaff, Soya Hulls and Meadow Hay) serve two key purposes. Firstly, to benefit sound growth of the young horse and secondly to aid in ensuring the good digestive health of all horses. A low-starch feed will assist to minimise the negative effect of insulin on joint and cartilage development. In addition, the low starch and high fibre composition of Dunstan Breed & Grow will help to ensure good hindgut microflora activity and reduce the likelihood of digestive upsets associated with a high-starch or low -fibre diets.
A comprehensive mineral and vitamin supplement is added to Dunstan Breed & Grow. Minerals are included in their Organic form including Selenium from Selenium Yeast, and are therefore safer and more bio-available to the horse, and ensure optimum utilisation. A balanced inclusion of Calcium and Phosphorus are also included at levels to promote sound bone & joint development.
In the Mare’s last trimester of pregnancy, adequate mineral supplementation is of key importance for foetal development and skeletal health of the subsequent foal. When fed at the recommended intakes, Dunstan Breed & Grow will provide the necessary intake of these key nutrients.
During lactation, the Mare have a significant increase in energy demands. Dunstan Breed & Grow is highly palatable, and being low in starch and high in fibre, it provides a very safe way to meet the high energy requirements of the lactating Mare.
As well as the high-fibre nature of Dunstan Breed & Grow which ensure good hindgut health, the addition of the live yeast further aids digestion and will assist in maintaining a more optimal hindgut.
Quality protein ingredients are used to ensure good amino acid status which is of key importance in all breeding horses. Includes Mannan Oligosaccharide and Aluminosilicate Clay to aid in digestive comfort.

The recommended feeding rates are based on a 500kg horse and are guidelines only.
Weanling 2.5kg – 4kg Yearling 3kg – 5kg Pregnant Mare 2.5kg – 4kg Lactating Mare 2.5kg – 5kg - The recommended feeding rates for Dunstan Breed & Grow are based on a 500kg (or mature weight) horse and are guidelines only. Daily feed amounts will vary depending on pasture availability and body condition. Horses are very much individuals with different metabolic efficiencies, some require a little more, others a little less, for the same level of activity.
- Ensure adequate fibre intakes by providing 1%-1 .5% per day of the horse's body weight as chaff, hay, Dunstan Betabeet/Sugarbeet or pasture (on a Dry Matter basis).
- For good doing Mares in their last trimester, feed Dunstan Pasture Plus concentrate as a replacement for Dunstan Breed & Grow to ensure adequate mineral intake.
- It is advisable to split the daily hard-feed into at least two feeds, preferably 3-4, but feed no more than 2.0kg of Dunstan Breed & Grow per meal.
General Notes
Always ensure the Horse has access to clean drinking water.
High Copper levels in Dunstan Breed & Growmake it unsuitable for feeding to sheep.
Dunstan Horsefeeds are best used within four months from the time of purchase.
This ensures the vitamins included in Dunstan Horsefeeds remains efficacious to ensure optimum equine health.
However, as is the case with human foods, “fresh is best”. So always aim to feed Dunstan products as fresh as you are able.
